Thanks for correcting my previous statement that this was the same actor as 8n Lust Caution. As you said, it was a different actor that played in the hugely erotic 1992 film, The Lover, opposite Jane March, an English teenager with no prior acting experience, whom the director chose after seeing her in a fashion magazine. Set in 1920s colonial Indochina, a pretty, virginal French teenager (Jane March) meets a handsome Chinese playboy (Tony Leung Ka Fai) from a respectable family. Going against the conventions of their respective societies, the lustful pair begin a torrid affair in a seedy Saigon neighborhood. Their strong attraction towards one another is only intensified by the illicit nature of their rendezvous. Given such circumstances, can their relationship last? This was the first western film to be made on location in Vietnam for decades. The sex scenes are almost as steamy as those in Lust Caution,  because of the chemistry between Jane March and Tony.

Tony was 45 and in a lifelong relationship with Carina Lau. Tony said he got permission from Carina Lau to shoot the film. Tang Wei was 28 and single. Tony married Carina Lau the following year and they are still together.

I agree her nipples are perfection, I also found her armpit and pubic haor really arousing. But the great thing about thus film is that every scene between Tony and Tang Wei, whether playing cards in hia house, at the tailor, at the jeweller, or at dinner in two restaurants - all these scenea have incendiary sexual chemistry. The film is told through the sex. It's a masterpiece.

Was the sex unsimukated?     Looking at visual evidence, the brightened and slowed sequence from the third sex scene shows the thrusting of a penis, but the low angle of the shot means it could have conceivably been faked. The blu-ray has six frames in the second sex scene (just after shot of the guards and a dog) that when brightened by a large amount, reveals a condom. Not only would this be much more difficult to fake (not to mention a condom would not be used if it was fake), the way the camera starts at the pubic regions and then circles around to show the faces is obviously designed to leave no doubt of what is happening.

Finally, the film also has an 18 USC 2257 notice after the credits, something normally only found in porn productions because the writing of the law quite specifically refers to unsimulated sex acts.

I reduced the crew to only four people, myself, everybody had different functions, many jobs, the cameraman, the focus puller, a boom operator, that's all, other than the actors on set, everybody else is outside the studio, so it's very intimate, we are like a team, a private team, we took an oath and everything, when we are going into the private territory. Wong Chia Chi was sitting on an arm like this, baby arm we call it, to give it flexibility, for improvisation , to capture the genuine performance. I think it was well crafted technically and we allowed ourselves to go free from time to time, that's how we did it. There are details I don't want to tell you..." Lee said.

In the film first-time actress Tang Wei portrays the young woman who agrees to ensnare the sinister figure, played by one of Asia's biggest screen stars Tony Leung.

Tang, who told Reuters she had had to hold back tears and clutch her stomach watching the film and her performance on the big screen in Venice for the first time said she, like her character Wong Chia Chi, had grown up whilst making the film. The actress added she had had to take time off to recover after filming finished.

"I think I also grew up, I grew up with Wong Chia Chi. In the beginning of the film she is a pretty girl and then changes as she becomes older and older and I also changed during the process of making this film. It was a very exhausting project. After finishing the film I was so exhausted I could not work for eight months," she said.

Leung, a long-time collaborator with Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai said 25 years of experience in acting had prepared him for the complex love scenes but admitted making the movie had not been a walk in the park for him, either.

"First I think the emotional scene, is, will be very difficult for me. The love scene will be very difficult for me. But at the end I find that the walking scene is the most difficult scene because every time when I walk, there is one scene when I walk Tang Wei home, it reminds me of walking with Maggie, Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li, the music just come out in my head , I mean the music in 'In The Mood for Love' just when I walk with that woman dressed in traditional Cheongsham and the sound which came from the high heels it just, I just jumped back to that character so it was tough, it was tough," he said, referring to Wong's arthouse hits 'In the Mood for Love' and '2046.
